Attention to all space geeks! Get ready to fulfill your fantasy in this cool free to play MMO . Star Conflict will let you battle against thousand of pilots wordwide in the outer space. It is in an Open Beta stage now and you don’t even need to pay a dime to try this game. But will Star Conflict face the biggest problem of free-to-play game just like others?
Frankly speaking , the graphic of this game is just mediocre . It’s soundtrack? nah… As for the plot , the developer has described an intriguing storyline on their official website. But in fact , when you actually play the game , you don’t feel anything related to its story. The game bring you to the prompt screen right after you log in without any introduction. So where’s the fun here? Did I just say it’s awesome? Yes, it is! Thanks to the game super deep ship customization ,ton of weapon variations and ship types.
From the start , you have to choose one of the three factions i.e. The Empire , The Federation and The Jericho . Each faction has its own pros , cons and each has its own unique ship types and pilot skills. After that , the game will bring you to the prompt screen which you can adjust your ship setting , buy new ship , ammunition , enhance your ship , sign contract , upgrade pilot skill or chat with other players. You might be confused by seeing so many things on this screen and don’t know what to do first . But it’s not a big deal because you can get used to the game mechanic in 1-2 hours. The game provide you with only one free ship but you can use money earned from the mission ( or real money from in-game micropayment) to buy more later. Anyway , if you need a higher tier ships , you need to level up your faction rank to unlock them.
There are ships that buyable only by real money and guess what? Yea , they have better stats than those you can buy with game money. Will this be the biggest problem of free-to-play game I have mentioned above? If you don’t understand what I mean then let me explain to you. I have seen many good free-to-play games became deserted because they turned out to be “Pay to Win” . Some of them are horribly unbalance due to players that can afford to spend much real money are way too powerful. But for Star Conflict , this game is incredibly balance . Because although real money ships have better stats , they have some downsides as well e.g. less equipment slots , no faction bonus for special abilities. . Credit** thanks to a nice comment below from mr. “sOmething” for pointing out the information that I’ve overlooked.
Ships are divided in to three classes . The fighter class that balance in both speed and armor . The frigate class , the giant ship that has the most weapon capacity and shielded by the thickest armor but it is very slow . And lastly , the interceptor class , the light weight and agile ship , it’s very fast and maneuverable but it can be shot down with only few serious attacks due to its thin armor. So you can choose the one that match your playstyle most and if you still don’t satisfy with your ship performance , you are free to upgrade your ship the way you like. Let’s say , if you think your frigate is tough as nail but a turtle can crawl faster, you can change your armor into light weight which will sacrifice some of your defense but gain a better speed and movement in return. Or you feel that your fighter is lack of firepower , you can switch from its laser beam which is very accurate but low dps to a plasma cannon . What I described here are just small fractions of adjustable options in Star Conflict. There are a lot more you can do e.g. decorate your ship with stickers , missile upgrade , ship modules ( ship skill) etc..
Joining the match is very easy. Just hit the “fight” button and relax , the game will find the room for you. There are three playable modes which is Arcade , Regular and Scenario . Arcade and regular are PVP . The match objective will be random. Sometimes you will have to wipe all other team players to win . Sometimes you have to capture and control the point to win. Star Conflict PVP modes are very fun and addictive. Sadly , the scenario mode ( PVE ) is disappointing .In PVE mode , you and other players just have to keep shooting waves of enemies again and again until no enemy left.
If you are a space combat fan who looking for the game you can spend the whole day with it. This game is an excellent choice for you.
Pros + : Fun PVP modes , Satisfying ships customization , numerous variations of weapons and ship modules.
Cons - : PVE is a joke . Too few maps and playable modes.
